Stock Market Opening Hours: When Can I Buy/Sell?

At NuWealth, we have a variety of assets available to invest in, including UK, EU, and US stocks and funds. If you’re interested in buying and selling stocks, it’s important to know when the stock market is open for business.

The London Stock Exchange:

Monday-Friday (excluding UK bank holidays) 8:00 am to 4:30 pm UK time.

The New York Stock Exchange:

Monday-Friday (excluding US bank holidays) 9:30 am to 4:00 pm New York (NY)/Eastern Time (ET). This is usually 14:30 - 21:00 UK time but is subject to change according to daylight savings time.

EU Stock Markets:

We also hold a variety of stocks on various EU markets. These markets typically also operate from 8am to 4.30pm UK time, but you may need to double-check for the specific stock.

Bank Holidays

The markets may close early (or not open at all) in the case of certain holidays – whether national or international. For example, many markets will close on Christmas, and in America, markets close for holidays like Martin Luther King day. If a buy or sell hasn't been processed when you expected it to, it might be because of a holiday!

Investing with NuWealth

With NuWealth, buys and sells are placed once a day (this enables us to keep your account fees low) shortly after 15:00 each business day, and should complete soon after. You can buy or sell your investments at any time, even on weekends, but they won’t be processed until the next trading window rolls around, which for us, is Monday-Friday at 3pm.

Typically, buys and sells placed before noon will be processed the same business day at 3pm - trades placed after noon will be rolled into the next business day’s trading window.

However, investments placed in ‘The Adventurer’, ‘Fly the Flag’, ‘Bond, Global Bond’, ‘Slow and Steady’ or ‘The Balanced’ need to be placed before 11am on a business day in order to be processed the same day - though please be aware that these 5 specific Themed investments can sometimes take up to four working days to complete.

Is a Buy or Sell taking longer than expected?

If a buy or sell hasn’t been placed when you expected it to be, double check that you placed it before the noon cut-off, that it’s a business day, and that a holiday in the UK or internationally isn’t impacting stock market trading times. Also, keep in mind that The Adventurer’, ‘Fly the Flag’, ‘Bond, Global Bond’, ‘Slow and Steady’ or ‘The Balanced’ can sometimes take up to four working days to complete.
